Custom Moulded Earplug Speakers

I recently decide to buy a pair of custom moulded earplugs with speakers in an effort of saving my hearing and still being able to hear my wife while riding. Once again I goggled looking for reviews for earplugs with speakers for motorcycle riders. There were a number of providers all for around $200.00.

We live in western Canada and no one anywhere near us make such a device. Most hearing aid stores can make a mould but you will have to mail them to someone to have speakers installed.

Fortunately for me I am a pilot for a company that has an office in Denver and when in Denver for a few days I was able to drive up to Boulder and have mine made right at EAR Inc.

I called Ear Inc the day before to inquire about the best way to go for motorcycling and I had a super helpful salesperson who told me everything I needed to know. I decided on a set of Plugz sports monitors and I setup a time to go in the next morning to have my mould made.

What a great bunch of people at EAR and what professionals of hearing protection manufacturers.

After a few minutes of chit chat and deciding on what color I wanted I was directed to a comfy chair and found my ear being filled with liquid and suddenly everything got very quiet. After a very short time my technican was unscrewing the mould from my ears.

It would take them a few days to fit the speakers and since I live in Canada the shipping was going to be fairly pricey and after discussing my situation they told me they would drop off earplugs at our company aircraft hanger and that on the next trip down I would have my earplugs. What service eh!

It took a little while to get used to putting them in and out and getting the right one in the right ear but after that it’s a breeze. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase and the service. The plugs have excellent sound and no outside noise. In the airplane I am not able to wear both earplugs because even at full volume I cannot hear air traffic control in my headset speakers. Yes they are that good.

While I was at EAR inc I noticed a Sena intercom box on the counter and the fellow I was dealing with told me they had just got them to test and found them to be very very good. I decided I will have to check out Sena intercom.

Update

Well it’s been two years and my left earplug is cutting in and out. Maybe it has something to do with getting the cord wrapped around the handlebars and when finally reaching the end of line almost pulling my ear off along with the plug.

I contacted EAR and they will inspect and do a basic repair for $50.00 U.S. dollars plus shipping. Someday I’ll get the Denver pilot to help out and drop it off in Boulder for a repair and then I’ll add another update. We have a few inches of snow and it’s -12c so I’m not in a hurry.
